Lynn's latest restoration project
Employed by York-based building restoration firm William Anelay Ltd, who have been preserving our architectural and cultural heritage for 260 years, Lynn has worked on a variety of different projects, predominantly restoration, but also new build, up and down the country.
“Restoration is an area of construction that I’ve always found interesting and it is hugely rewarding to co-ordinate the range of skills required to bring a building back to its former glory,” added Lynn who began her career as a site engineer 12 years ago and has for the last 3 years been employed as a Contracts Manager with William Anelay.
She is currently project managing the complex restoration of a Grade 2* Listed canalside navigation warehouse which is to be converted into community and business facilities as part of Wakefield’s programme of regeneration on behalf of development company CTP St James. It’s a challenging project but one that will add real value to the community: “It gives you great satisfaction to be able to play a part in preserving some of our most historic, and in some cases, prestigious buildings”
She continued: “I always wanted to do a job that was not normally associated with a woman. At times it hasn’t been easy, however over the years I’ve learnt a great deal from a variety of people from different trades.
“I joined Anelays because mainstream construction wasn’t offering me what I wanted any longer. At Anelays you get the opportunity to wake up to a piece of history every day and feel as though you are part of a healing process to some of the structures that are in, well lets say a sorry state.
“You also get the chance to see some amazing buildings that under usual circumstances you would not normally see,” added Lynn who is one of a team of contract managers routinely charged with overseeing Anelay’s army of skilled craftspeople including stonemasons, lead workers and specialist sub-contractors.
The list of buildings Lynn has worked on is impressive. Prior to the Calder-Hebble Navigation Warehouse she was involved in a project to restore many of the monuments and buildings set amongst the wonderfully landscaped grounds of Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park in South Yorkshire. Lynn was also involved with managing the award winning lead, and re-slating works at the imposing Bowes Museum in County Durham.
As for her dream project, Lynn has no doubts. “The Taj Mahal. What an amazing building and what an addition to the CV that would be!”
