The new vision for Digbeth
rg+p, a Midlands architectural design, project management and quantity surveyor practice, has won planning approval for a £130m design scheme to regenerate Birmingham’s dilapidated Irish Quarter in Digbeth. rg+p plans to transform the run down Digbeth area into Connaught Square, a stunning, mixed-use scheme to include shops, offices, bars, restaurants, 631 apartments, a luxury spa, a fourstar 180 bed hotel featuring 36 serviced apartments, a sky bar and panoramic restaurant. The rg+p design makes full use of the River Rea running through the 4.5 acre site which features two new public squares and six major new buildings including a community complex to replace the old Irish Centre.

The high-profile development sits on one of the principle routes into Birmingham city centre, adjacent to the Bullring shopping centre and is opposite the city’s main coach station. The layout of the new Connaught Square development is based on new and existing routes around and through the site with the two public squares tying the whole development together. Focal points have been created at either end of the site, with the new hotel and the purposedesigned Irish Centre community complex, with a pedestrian boulevard connecting the two.
