James & Taylor have taken top honours in the Power of Aluminium Awards 2008 with their shimmering façade for Manchester University’s new Biosciences building
The company, one of the UK’s leading designers and suppliers of building facades, came first in the Innovative Surface Finish category for their stunning finish to the Michael Smith building. It was created using four different anodized finishes that coated both mirror polished and highly etched Senses aluminium tiles.
Developed to showcase aluminium as the metal of the future, and recognise and reward some of the most innovative and exciting examples of how it has been used worldwide, the Awards were presented by designer Wayne Hemingway in a ceremony at Warwick University on 17 April.
Accepting the award, James & Taylor’s Managing Director Bob James said: “We worked closely with the architects Sheppard Robson on this unique design, which made use of natural elements and innovative extruded aluminium cladding. We are absolutely delighted to have our work recognised with this award, which the team here wholeheartedly deserves.”
Sheppard Robson considered over 30 aluminium tiles from James & Taylor before choosing four different degrees of reflectivity and colour.
Partner Alex Solk said: “It’s often too easy to stick with the norm. This award recognises the value and all the hard work that we put in with James & Taylor to develop an innovative cladding solution.”
