While the UK Intellectual Property Office is involved in registering thousands of innovative inventions every year, when it came to constructing a new multi-storey car park for its staff and visitors, the project team opted to utilise tried and tested products. This made Tremco illbruck’s Rapide system the obvious choice of deck coating system. Construction of the new car park structure at the Intellectual Property Office’s Newport site was led by Carillion, with Cardiff-based Powell Dobson being the architectural consultant. Together they opted to use the high performance, reinforced Rapide system as the best means of protecting the decks from water ingress and also of giving vehicles or pedestrians using the facility a sure grip. Just as importantly though, with the contract scheduled to run from October 2006 through to the following Easter, was the system’s ability to facilitate winter working. Andy Hazlehurst, Managing Director for specialist installer, Deccon, explains: “Utilising the Rapide system meant that despite severe weather causing delays on site, the contract actually progressed faster than it would have done using any other alternative. This was due to Rapide’s low temperature curing characteristics and the system’s performance in terms of bond and other issues was very satisfactory.” The Director in Charge of the project for Powell Dobson, Ian Norman, adds: “There were considerable delays in addressing areas such as the top deck of the car park, due to three months of very wet weather. However, we have had no reports back of any problems with the surfacing.” Across the eight decks of the Intellectual Property Office’s new multi-storey car park Deccon applied a total of 2,300 square metres of the Rapide system in the Grey colour option.
