Swish commended for environmental performance

Swish is expanding its environmental credentialsA year after being awarded Environmental Management Standard ISO14001, Swish Building Products has been commended by the British Standards Institute (BSI) Auditor for its environmental progress.

Since achieving ISO14001 certification Swish has continued to improve the environmental performance of its manufacturing and distribution operations with the most significant achievement being a considerable reduction in waste being sent for landfill as well as reductions in energy and fuel usage.

As a specialist supplier of cellular PVC roofline and cladding products to the social housing and new build sectors, Swish has been working hard to lessen its environmental impact. An environmental management system was put in place in 2007 and a number of objectives and targets were set.

Michelle Miller SHEQ manager said: “Everyone at Swish has worked hard, not only to achieve the targets that we set last year but to improve on them this year.

“To achieve certification Swish’s main objectives were to reduce electricity, water and heater fuel consumption. In addition we set ourselves ambitious targets for cutting the amount of waste sent to landfill and the CO2 emissions from our delivery vehicles.

“Going forward into 2008 Swish will be looking to achieve even higher targets as we invest in a range of initiatives to reduce waste and further cut the amount of water and electricity that we use.”

Michelle added: “Swish’s ISO14001 certification is also important in a very practical way for developers who wish to specify PVC roofline. It allows them to claim vital points for responsible sourcing under the Code for Sustainable Homes. PVC building materials save social housing providers and homeowners alike a significant amount of money that would otherwise be paid out in maintenance costs over the lifetime of the building.”
