Roofing manufacturer Marley Eternit has committed to making a 25% cut in its carbon emissions and energy waste by 2012.
Marley Eternit, has measured all of the energy used across its UK sites and the resulting carbon emissions and is now working with the Carbon Trust to reduce this figure by 25% over the next four years.
Martin Turner, managing director of Marley Eternit, comments: “We wanted to introduce a meaningful carbon policy with real targets that all of our staff and suppliers could get behind.”
The specific actions that Marley Eternit will be taking to meet this target include working with suppliers to reduce the carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing process and reducing the reliance on raw materials by increasing the use of recycled materials partially to replace cement.
Marley Eternit is a leading authority in eco-processes within the industry, with statistics to show that its site in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire already replaces 26 per cent of its primary aggregate with recycled material.
Martin Turner, continues: “The use of energy is vital in the manufacture of our products and represents our most significant source of carbon emissions. That is why we have developed a comprehensive carbon management programme with the Carbon Trust.”
The company has already made significant headway in its bid to reduce the use of natural aggregates and last year Marley Eternit launched EcoLogic, an innovative pollution busting tile which uses half the amount of sand during manufacture than an equivalent concrete tile.
