Fire-rated cavity wall switch and socket boxes

Scolmore International has announced the launch of  its FLAMEGUARD System series of products. Using the same tried and tested technology utilised in its range of downlighters, the new FLAMEGUARD dry lining back box offers unprecedented levels of protection and efficacy in restoring the integrity of a fire rated stud wall, after fitting electrical accessory products.

Based on a conventional galvanised steel switch and socket box, the FLAMEGUARD back box offers 2 key benefits not found in the existing products designed for this purpose. Conventional dry lining boxes are manufactured in urea or PVC and the process of adding a fire retardant intumescent material to a moulded plastic box will be of little benefit, as plastic mouldings will start to deform and deteriorate at temperatures around 1700C. The intumescent material is designed to activate at around 9000C, long after the degradation process of the plastic box.

The steel construction of the FLAMEGUARD backbox will withstand temperatures of around 1,0000C before distorting and will remain in-situ whilst continuing to provide an effective fire barrier.

Another benefit to be found in the FLAMEGUARD backbox is its unique ‘Snaplok’ fixing method. The fixing brackets are set in their retracted mode and, once the box is in position in the wall, pressure is applied to the brackets which releases them into position automatically, to hold the box and any fitted accessory securely in position.

The integral fire barrier provided by the FLAMEGUARD backbox means that there is no longer any need for complicated, costly and sometimes ineffectual assemblies of hoods or other ‘bolt-on’ devices to provide long term peace of mind.
