Metal Technology provides glass facades for the Sheffield Bioincubator

A five storey landmark building, the £6.9m Sheffield Bioincubator, with glazed facades in Metal Technology’s aluminium systems, is now the hub for bioscientists and entrepreneur. Located in the University of Sheffield precinct, it was designed by architects Bond Bryan with Kier as main contractor and architectural glazing fabricator Anaco Systems.

Providing 1620m2 of laboratories and 1080m2 office space for companies developing new ideas in bioscience, the Bioincubator building uses two of Metal Technology System 17 curtain walling systems, Silicone Pointed and High Rise. System 17 High Rise was a perfect choice for the four storey main façade which incorporated both clear and opaque glass and brise soleil at each level.

System 17 Silicone Pointed, offers a competitive option to expensive structural glazing systems, and was ideal for the dramatic full height entrance atrium with System 10 Commercial Doors.  Without the need for external capping, Silicone Pointed provides a smooth glass wall with the glass secretly fixed to standard structural mullions and transoms.

Metal Technology continues to impress with the opening of a new 10k sq ft advanced polyamide rolling facility adjacent to the existing 60k sq ft HQ. This will help reduce lead times on polyamide stock orders and dual colour finishes as well as increasing stock capacity. With further expansion planned on the Antrim site this year, the company will boast 100k sq ft of production, stock and administrative capacity by 2008.

The Bioincubator has been developed to create a dedicated and separate R&D unit to facilitate the commercialisation of bioscience research from the Sheffield’s bioscience community and to offer a location for other organisations to locate close to a centre of excellence in biosciences.
