Leading emergency evacuation chair company Evac+Chair International has provided the University of Wales, Newport with a simple evacuation solution for the mobility impaired.
On selecting Evac+Chair, Health and Safety officer Wayne Jones explains, “We at the University have a responsibility to provide an equal university experience to all, and make sure that those with disabilities are not in any way restricted. After watching an Evac+Chair demonstration at a health and safety exhibition, we were confident that the chairs would be suitable for the university. We were impressed with the design of the chairs which makes them very easy to use.”
The university, situated across 2 campuses, is committed to providing an excellent service to all students, staff and visitors, regardless of disability.
Health and Safety officials recognised that in order to provide full access to all parts of the buildings, an evacuation procedure would need to be put into place for those who would have difficulty negotiating stairways in an emergency.
As part of this solution, a number of Evac+Chairs were installed at various points across the university.
The evacuation chairs offer a controlled descent and can be used on even steeper stairways up to an angle of 40º.
Evac+Chairs can carry a payload of up to 150kg but are at the same time lightweight and with the correct training easy to operate.
Evac+Chair carries out regular ‘Key Trainer’ Masterclasses©, with the aim of training a member of an organisation so that they in turn can train colleagues.
The company also offers an easy rental package on chairs as an affordable alternative, which includes annual servicing of the chairs.
The University of Wales, Newport is very pleased with the evacuation chairs.
Wayne Jones adds, “Evac+Chair gives us peace of mind. We now know that everyone can be safely evacuated in the event of an emergency”.
