Cordek crash decks on track for safety

Cordek Filcor, in the shape of high density expanded polystyrene blocks, has been utilized to provide a protective ‘crash deck’ to allow safe demolition of over 5000 tonnes of concrete within the West Stand at the Lansdowne Road Stadium in Dublin, where development of a new 50,000 seat stadium was initiated in 2007.

With trains running beneath the stand, it was important that demolition work could be carried out quickly and with minimum disruption to services. The 1.2 metre deep Filcor ‘crash deck’ was an ideal solution.

The contractor for the project was DSM Demolition Ltd of Birmingham. A spokesman for DSM explained, “We had approval from Irish Rail to close the track for 72 hours. Using the Cordek system, we managed to lay 1000 cm3 of crash mats, demolish the bridge, clear the debris and remove the crash decks with almost 12 hours to spare and no damage caused to the track – an excellent result.”

The benefits of using EPS blocks as crash decks have been recognized for some years.  In April of last year Geoffrey Osborne Ltd used 180 cubic metres of high density Filcor to protect the railway line at Southwick, Essex.

To demonstrate their expertise in this area, Cordek have published a new brochure entitled ‘Working on the Railways’.
